Hello My Beautiful Friends!
Today I am sharing a little piece of Texas beauty because this is my first spring in Georgetown, TX. It is Red Poppy season and they are everywhere. I am quite familiar with Texas. My family is in San Antonio which is two hours away from Georgetown. I grew up with all of the beautiful Texas wildflowers and Bluebonnets. Every year in April, San Antonio hosts springtime festivals to celebrate the Battle of Flowers. The Battle of Flowers is in honor of those defeated in the Alamo and the many battles that took place in Texas. Texas also gained its independence from Mexico on April 21st, 1836.
I’ve never been to Georgetown nor did I know about its unique beauty until now.
About the Red Poppy Festival
From my understanding, every year Georgetown has a Red Poppy Festival around this time of year.
It is filled with good food, a parade, markets, and other events. However, everything is postponed this year until October 1st- 3rd 2021.
You can get all the information right here- https://poppy.georgetown.org/about/
To summarize the history of Georgetown mentioned in this website; the Red Poppy flower is not native to Texas or Georgetown. They are actually from Europe! After WWI an American Expeditionary Forces Soldier sent Red Poppy seeds to his mother in Georgetown where she planted them in Old Town East 7th Street. They grew all over the historic district. In 1990, Georgetown became the “Red Poppy Capital of Texas” (Poppy.georgetown.org).
Its beauty is captivating and quite breathtaking. I love flowers. I cannot wait to experience the Poppy Festival! More on that later.
Overall my time back in Texas and in Georgetown has been fun. 2021 brought snow twice and it appears to be cooler than usual this spring but I am certainly enjoying Texas’ beauty.
This picture was totally a candid shot lol! I was trying to hold my hat because the wind was blowing.
